One of the most largest and most popular of categories of plants, perennials perhaps offer more than any other group of plants, with a rich palette of colour, form, fragrance and texture.
There are perennials suitable for almost every area in the garden, however large or small your garden is and whatever mood or style you want to create there are a wide range of sizes and colours from the coolest of blues to the fiery reds.
With some selection perennials can be used to create borders with a prolonged season of interest, some evergreen (keeping their leaves in the winter), some deciduous (losing their leaves in the winter). They can be used in a mixed border with shrubs to give long term structure or with spring bulbs and long flowering bedding plants to fill in during the quieter periods that proceed and follow the glorious mid to late summer flush of colour.
Perennials are mostly clump forming plants that can flower from May to the first frost of winter, most then lose their leaves and can either be left or cut back in winter or the latest when their new shoots appear in early spring. Now is the time to give them a little feed or a mulch of manure, mushroom compost or your compost from your compost bin then watch them flourish with vigour like no other plants!
You can grow perennials in a wide range of soils and situations with specific plants suitable for any situation. They are also suited to growing in a wide range of containers, especially some of the more modern compact varieties. Perennials are usually long-lived plants and come up year after year.
At Loxley Nurseries we produce something in the region of 15,000 perennials a year and we have a range of different size plants available at what we think very reasonable prices again cutting out the middle man! |
